Holiday prep #4 - what to pack for a 3 day trip.

holiday preparation packing
So it's almost time for me to go on my first abroad holiday of the year. Me and the daughter are off to Dubrovnik for a few days. So this is going to be a beach/pool, city break/culture with walking type of holiday. Which makes packing a carry on case only, quite challenging.
I've never been known for my holiday packing prowess but I have to say having been on a few holidays in the past couple of years which only required a carry on case, has made me a little bit more efficient. Things like choosing carefully a pair of sandals that will go with all outfits, not a different pair of sandals for each outfit and the same for a handbag. You actually do not need a separate bag for day and night you know!

My packing tips for hand luggage are:
1. roll, not fold, all your clothes. This really does give you more room.
2. stuff every crevice - put underwear, swimwear etc inside shoes.
3. wrap anything delicate like a camera inside your rolled up clothes, so it's protected and won't roll or slide around (inside a padded bra or bikini top is great).
4. check if the hotel you are staying in provides toiletries/hair dryer in your room, if so you don't need to pack shampoo, conditioner and shower gel (sometimes they also provide body lotion but I would take your own as the hotel one always seems to smell of shoe polish..). This will also save on your liquids allowance.
5. if you are travelling with an airline that is very strict on one piece of carry on luggage only (so that's your case and not a handbag as well), go for a case which has a zip compartment on the front so you can quickly store away your purse/wallet, passport etc as you are boarding the plane. This also avoids the embarrassment of having to try and stuff your handbag into your already overflowing case in front of everyone, with the contents of your case on full display!

Here's my packing list for a 3 day trip:
  • 2 x tankinis (bikini days are over for me!)
  • 1 x swimwear cover up (a sarong can also work as a scarf if it gets cold in the evenings or an impromtu beach towel to sit on)
  • 1 x pair of Haviana flip flops
  • 1 x pair of Toms sandals (more comfortable than trainers for walking in)
  • 1 x pair of black sandals (go with everything)
  • 1 x hat
  • 1 x pair of sunglasses
  • underwear
  • strapless bra
  • 2 x dresses for evening
  • 1 x jumpsuit for evening
  • 1 x shorts
  • 2 x t-shirts
  • 1 x playsuit for day wear
  • 1 x small rucksack
  • 1 x large purse/doubles as a small clutch bag
  • camera and charger
  • 1 x socket adapter
  • phone charger
  • sun cream for face and body
  • insect repellent spray (you pesky mozzies aren't getting me this time!)
  • minimal and multi-tasking makeup (palettes are great for travel and can contain everything you need bar foundation/bb cream)
  • sea salt hair spray
  • deodorant
  • after sun/body moisturiser
  • toothpaste and brush
  • make up remover
Everyone loves the mini products for travel but I do find that either they are too mini or too expensive. A tip is to decant your favourite products in to re-usable containers. I have looked around and Primark do the best value pack of three bottles and 1 small jar, all in a zip-lock plastic bag for £1.00. And you get a selection of labels, so you don't end up washing your hair with Femfresh!
