Nivea Post Shave Balm, as a primer.

Ok, so I've jumped on the bandwagon with this one but how could I not pass up the chance to road test a product which is less than £5 and has many well respected You Tubers and Bloggers raving about as their make up primer of choice?

Nivea Men Post Shave Balm is, or was, for men.  NikkieTutorials from You Tube discovered this by accident, when she realised she had no moisturiser when staying away from home, and thought she would use her boyfriend's post shave balm.  And she was very impressed, and this girl knows a thing or two about make up!

I started using a primer about 18 months ago when, having some left over euros, I let the Mac lady at Malaga airport talk me into buying the Mac Prep & Prime Natural Radiance. And I do like it, so much so that I now will not, cannot, put on foundation without having primed first of all.  Primer makes your foundation go on smoothly, makes it last longer and really helps to control shine, and can blur open pores.  The Mac is £29.50.  The Nivea is (currently) £3.52 in Superdrug.  I had nothing to lose.

So putting the Mac and Nivea head to head (insert Rocky theme tune) what are my thoughts?

I love the Nivea.  I love the smell (a very slight manly aftershave smell, which soon disappears).  I love the value - £3.52 for 100ml.  I love the packaging - simple, classic, glass bottle.  But most of all I love what it does.  It is a light, milky texture which glides easily on to your skin and dries quite quickly.  It dries matt, so there is no unnecessary sheen.  It stays on and makes your make up stay on all day, and then some.  You really can't go wrong with this.  And the value of it!

The Mac is nice but for me, it was a splurge (you know the rules about shopping at airports?  It's no man's land, so its almost like its free shopping, its part of your holiday so it's always ok!).  Whilst the Mac got me in to priming, I wouldn't re-purchase it because it doesn't do any more than the Nivea.  And at £29.50 for 50ml, there's no comparison on value.

So I will be using the Nivea for a while yet and will continue to spread the word of this accidental wonder.  If you fancy giving this a go, get the sensitive one.

Thanks for reading.
